When we took our first long vacation without our dog Hobbes, he displayed symptoms of anxiety that we passed off simply as boredom. I don’t believe we were at fault, at the time, we just didn’t have enough information to work with to help ol’ Hobbes out (we didn’t even know about CBD oil), but over time we’ve identified more signs of anxiety in our dog, and have had a lot of success treating that anxiety with CBD oil for dogs.
Our first vacation as dog owners was unfortunately sans dog. The hotel we had booked just before Hobbes became part of our family was not pet friendly, so my sister, who lives just down the street, volunteered to spend her evenings after work with Hobbes, which meant Hobbes would be spending more time than usual, alone and away from his family. Hobbes did really well for the first couple days, but one morning my sister noticed that Hobbes had begun to dig up the tile grout in our foyer. Being a new dog owner I thought of course, Hobbes is an Australian cattle dog, which is a very smart and high-energy breed, so he’s probably bored out of his mind. At the same time, our Smoky Mountains trip was nott going well. Our first day featured perfect weather, and after check-in we were able to get a half day of sunshine in at the pool, but every single day that followed was gray and rain soaked. Over the next couple days we checked off every single planned indoor activity, and cancelled every outdoor activity. Knowing Hobbes wasn’t doing too well, we decided to check-out early and head home. Now I’m not suggesting that we’ll never take a vacation without our dog ever again, because we certainly have, but on the way home we decided to make a good faith effort to take Hobbes with us on vacations and trips home whenever possible. What happened during one of those road trips made us consider CBD oil for dogs.
A road trip we make quite often, is from Indianapolis to Chicago. We moved to Indianapolis from Chicago about eight years ago, and one of the things that made that move more palatable is that the trip is about three hours on the road, so the family is still relatively close. Our last trip home was in March of 2020 (right before COVID-19) for my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. Hobbes started the trip anxious as usual, and again we passed his anxious behavior off as excitement, since a trip in the car usually means something fun for Hobbes like a boat trip at Eagle Creek:
When Hobbes makes the trip up I-65 with us we tend to stop at Fair Oaks Farm. This is a nice halfway point, where we can grab a healthier lunch or dinner (honest, the BP gas station on site has fresh sandwiches from Fair Oaks), and also let Hobbes burn off some energy at Central Bark Dog Park. Unfortunately on this trip, we were in a pinch for time so we made a pit stop at McDonalds and ate dinner on the road. Like most dogs Hobbes is a sucker for human food, but we immediately noticed he wasn’t begging for food. He wasn’t even sniffing. Even worse, he refused french fries. FRENCH FRIES!! That was the first time I considered Hobbes might suffer from anxiety, and considered helping him with CBD pet treats.
For the record, here is a list of symptoms of anxiety in dogs, and I’ve checked the symptoms that my dog Hobbes typically displayed when left alone, or on car trips:
- Accidents in the house
- Aggressive behavior
- Barking or Whining ✔
- Destructive behavior ✔
- Pacing or Shaking✔
- Refusing food✔
And a short video I took of Hobbes's typical behavior in our car:
CBD Dog Treats Amazon - Sorry, Not Available!
The first place you might look for CBD oil for dogs is Amazon. I get it, we have a Prime account, and I do most of my shopping (especially my Christmas shopping) on Amazon. You’d assume you might find vet CBD oil reviews, or Canna Pet reviews on Amazon that might make this process easier, right? Unfortunately, Amazon prohibits CBD sales on its platform, so it’s up to you to find a trusted and educated retailer like Humanity Health CBD to help you with any questions you might have, like how much cbd oil should i give my dog? Honestly, that information is typically available on the product itself, or manufacturer’s website. If you were, for example, interested in Bark Avenue CBD Dog Treats, there’s a link to CBD dosing recommendations right on their website. Same with Colorado Hemp Honey, which is a sharable CBD product, so both you and your dog can enjoy the benefits of CBD. The serving recommendation for their hemp honey is based on weight:
- Dogs up to 10 lbs - 1/4 tsp CBD hemp honey daily
- Dogs 10 lbs to 50 lbs - 1/2 tsp CBD hemp honey daily
- Dogs 20 lbs to 50 lbs - 1 tsp CBD hemp honey daily
- Dogs 50 lbs and Up - 2 tsp CBD hemp honey daily
CBD Dog Treats for Anxiety
The good news is there are a lot of vehicles for getting your dog a dose of CBD:
- Tinctures for Dogs from Bluebird Botanicals and Honesty Paws.
- CBD Treats for Dogs from Honest Paws, KOI, and Laura’s Canine Alternatives
You can try any of the above CBD dog treats for seizures, anxiety, aggressive behavior, or issues where inflammation needs to be addressed.
I spoke with Brent at Humanity Health CBD about Hobbes’s anxiety, and I ended up choosing Honest Paws Calm Peanut Butter Infused with CBD Oil for Dogs.
What I like about this product is:
- It’s Made in the USA.
- ‘Dose by weight’ instructions are right there on the product label.
- Dogs love human food, so this is a real treat for them.
All that was left to do was test it out and see if Hobbes’s behavior improved.
I Gave My Dog CBD for Anxiety, This is What Happened
With COVID being a current issue, it’s been kind of difficult to plan a road trip that would really allow me to test out CBD on ol’ Hobbes, but then Father’s Day rolled around and I thought it would nice to have dinner somewhere local with a dog friendly patio where Hobbes would be welcome, so we decided on the
Oasis Diner in Plainfield, Indiana. Oasis is about a twenty minute drive from home, which is plenty of time to determine whether or not the CBD oil caused a change in Hobbes’s behavior. About an hour before we left, I added two tablespoons of CBD peanut butter to his dog food, allowed him to eat, and then about an hour later headed out to dinner.
I’m happy to report a noticeable change in Hobbes behavior!
Let’s talk about the car ride first. Hobbes did have company in the backseat, which may or may not have contributed to his mood, but I will say that he was indeed more quiet and more calm after taking the recommended dose of peanut butter with CBD oil. On a road trip to Chicago or Louisville (with one of us in the back seat to help calm him down), it would take Hobbes at least an hour or two to calm down to the point where he might consider sitting, even then, he’d never stop fidgeting. The biggest change I noticed was that Hobbes seemed more calm to the point where he gave lying down a chance:
In terms of whining or barking, that type of noise, Hobbes was quieter than usual. Obviously when you have a dog in your car you have to expect some dog noises (and smells), but in terms of a distracting amount of noise, Hobbes was significantly more quiet, which made our trip a lot less stressful. On the restaurant patio, Hobbes was his typical self, which is good news because we’re trying to treat anxiety, right? As I’ve said, we’ve taken Hobbes on many pet friendly vacations. The most recent of which was to Louisville:
I think it’s important to note that Hobbes’s behavior in the restaurant was normal because while I did want to give Hobbes CBD oil for dogs to help with his anxiety in the car, I wouldn’t have considered giving it to him a second time had he turned into a sleepy, zombie version of our dog at the restaurant, and that didn’t happen. Hobbes wanted french fries, he jumped up to sniff the table a couple times, so he was a little annoying, but for the most part well behaved and ready to play. And eat our food.
CBD Oil for Dogs: Thumbs Up
Hobbes’s first experience with CBD oil for dogs was a positive experience, not only for Hobbes, but for his family as well. Obviously, we’re all happy that CBD oil helped ease Hobbes’s anxiety in the car, but I’m personally grateful as the usual driver on these trips, to have a less distracting environment. The dog is anxious and bothers our teenage son, who gets agitated because he just wants to be on his phone, and that all helps contribute to an unsafe driving environment, but on this short trip CBD oil for dogs seems to have helped.
I am going to continue giving Hobbes CBD when appropriate. He’s only five years old, so treating dog arthritis with CBD isn’t a concern of ours at the moment. Moving forward, in addition to road trips, Hobbes is a bit of an introvert around other dogs, sometimes aggressive as well, and CBD oil for dogs is something that might help alleviate that anxiety as well. And while Hobbes doesn’t have any issues with fireworks on the 4th of July, that’s a time of year where CBD might help a lot of dogs sleep through the night.
Are there CBD Dog Treats Near Me?
Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill CBD is federally legal, and available to purchase in most states (in some form) except for Idaho, Iowa, and South Dakota. If you live in any other state you should be able to purchase CBD oil for dogs in person, or from any online retailer. In my opinion, Leafly is the best online resource for locating your nearest CBD dispensary, if you’re an android user, I highly recommend downloading the Leafly Android App, and then search by GPS or by Deals if you’re wanting to save a bit of money on CBD oil for dogs.
