As the air turns crisp and leaves begin to fall, many Indiana families are preparing for the cold months ahead. But for thousands of children right here in our communities, “preparing for winter” means facing freezing mornings without a proper coat. Across Indiana, more than 15 percent of children live in poverty — that’s over 200,000 Hoosier kids whose families are forced to make difficult choices every season. Heat or groceries? Rent or new winter clothing?
That’s where The Salvation Army’s Coats for Kids Indiana program steps in. For nearly four decades, this program has collected and distributed warm winter coats, hats, scarves, and gloves to ensure no child has to face the Indiana winter without protection or dignity. Each year, more than 5,000 coats are given out across Central Indiana alone.
Here at Humanity Health in Avon, we’re proud to be a local Coats for Kids collection site this fall. We’re collecting new or gently used winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarves through October 18. Donations don’t have to be brand new — just clean, in good condition, and ready to give another child warmth and hope.
When you drop off a coat, you’re doing more than donating clothing — you’re changing a child’s day, and maybe even their year. Imagine a little boy who no longer dreads recess because he finally has something warm to wear. Picture a young girl who walks to the bus stop smiling instead of shivering. That’s the real impact of your generosity.
Every single coat stays local, going to families right here in our Central Indiana communities. Your donation helps a neighbor, a classmate, a teammate — someone’s child who just needs a little help to stay warm this winter.
Giving is easy. Simply gather your clean, gently used or new items and bring them to Humanity Health, Avon, IN, during business hours before October 18. We’ll handle the rest — ensuring your contribution makes it directly into the hands of families who need it most.
And while coats are the focus, accessories make a huge difference too. Consider donating winter hats, mittens, gloves, scarves, and snow boots in youth sizes. Every item helps build confidence and comfort for a child who might otherwise go without.
In a time when life feels unpredictable and headlines can feel heavy, helping a neighbor is one of the most grounding, human acts we can share. A single coat can’t fix the world — but it can absolutely warm it.
Join us, Avon. Let’s fill those donation bins and make sure every child in our community walks into winter feeling warm, safe, and cared for.
